A Well-Being Concert

Audience members are invited to experience the transportive power of music in a Well-Being Concert specially programmed for Carnegie Hall’s immersive Zankel Hall Center Stage. Hosted by National Humanities Medal recipient and Peabody Award–winning journalist, author, and radio host Krista Tippett, this performance features a collaboration between Cuban jazz pianist Omar Sosa, Senegalese kora master Seckou Keita, and Venezuelan percussion virtuoso Gustavo Ovalles. This concert is part of the citywide festival Nuestros sonidos.

Following multiple sold-out recitals at Carnegie Hall in recent years, pianist Seong-Jin Cho returns with an all-Ravel program, performing the composer’s complete solo piano works, in recognition of the 150th anniversary of Ravel’s birth.

Principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic Anthony McGill pairs up with pianist Emanuel Ax for a program to include James Lee III’s Ad anah?, Schubert’s Sonata in A Minor, D. 821, “Arpeggione,” Price’s Adoration, Jessie Montgomery’s Peace, R. Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, Op. 73, Bernstein’s Clarinet Sonata, and Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 2, “Moonlight".”

This concert will be heard by listeners around the world as part of the Carnegie Hall Live broadcast and digital series. Produced by WQXR and Carnegie Hall, and co-hosted by WQXR’s Jeff Spurgeon and WNYC’s John Schaefer, the concert will be broadcast on WQXR 105.9 FM in New York and streamed online at wqxr.org and carnegiehall.org/wqxr.

Chilean jazz vocalist and Latin Grammy nominee Claudia Acuña performs treasures from the Latin American songbook in the intimate Zankel Hall Center Stage. Among the featured selections are festive and poignant songs made famous to American listeners by Nat King Cole’s trio of Spanish-language albums. This concert is part of the citywide festival Nuestros sonidos.

ENSEMBLE CONNECT
Monday, February 10 at 7:30 PM
(Weill Recital Hall)

Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect offers a program that begins with Schubert’s unfinished “Quartettsatz,” which endures today as a striking single movement and one of music’s great “what-ifs.” Two New York premieres followed by Katherine Balch, both commissioned by Carnegie Hall. Berio’s Ricorrenze, written for the composer’s friend Pierre Boulez, is featured as part of Carnegie Hall’s ongoing Boulez centennial celebration. The concert closes with Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 20, one of the septet format’s quintessential works during Beethoven’s lifetime and ours.

THEATRE OF VOICES

Led by Artistic Director Paul Hillier, the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Theatre of Voices returns with the world premiere of a new work by Julia Wolfe and the US premiere of A Brief Descent into Deep Time by John Luther Adams (both co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall). This Zankel Hall Center Stage program opens with A Western, a recent work by Michael Gordon.

BRENTANO STRING QUARTET

Appearing in the in-the-round setting of Zankel Hall Center Stage, the magnificent Brentano String Quartet returns to perform Haydn’s complete Op. 33 string quartets.

In his final season as Orchestra of St. Luke’s’ Principal Conductor, Bernard Labadie takes to the podium for Haydn’s Introduzione from The Seven Last Words of Christ, Mozart’s Symphony No. 39, and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor” featuring Marc-André Hamelin.

JINKX MONSOON

Actress and vocalist Jinkx Monsoon, who broke box office records in Broadway’s Chicago and made history as the first and only artist to win RuPaul’s Drag Race twice, makes her Carnegie Hall debut. This extraordinary entertainer with an irresistibly wicked-but-welcoming sense of humor is joined by a first-rate band (and special guests) in original songs and inspired covers that range from cabaret, blues, show tunes, and torch songs to high-energy rock and pop.

In an all-star pairing, pianists Yuja Wang and Víkingur Ólafsson offer a duo-recital program to include Berio’s “Wasserklavier” from Six Encores for Piano, Schubert’s Fantasie in F Minor, D. 940, Cage’s Experiences No.1, Nancarrow’s Study No. 6 (arr. Thomas Adès), John Adams’s Hallelujah Junction, Arvo Pärt’s Hymn to a Great City, and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.

THE KNIGHTS

The Knights—led by conductor Eric Jacobson—are joined by Aoife O’Donovan on vocals and guitar for her own America, Come (arr. Tanner Porter) paired with Felix Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” symphony and traditional Scottish tunes for violin and orchestra. America, Come is an original suite inspired by the lives, letters, and speeches of Carrie Chapman Catt and President Woodrow Wilson in the summer of 1920, when the suffragists made their pivotal march to Tennessee. The program opens with Mozart’s overture to The Marriage of Figaro.

Experience the ensemble that's been described as a “Colombian Postmodern Jukebox” (Billboard). Winner of the 2023 Latin Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album and one of the most exciting ensembles in Latin music today, Bogotá's colorful Monsieur Periné makes its Zankel Hall debut with a program that features an upbeat, swinging blend of Latin American and European flavors as part of the citywide festival Nuestros sonidos.

Since its first concerts in 1991, Concerto Copenhagen has developed into one of the leading Baroque orchestras in the world. Joined by artistic director, conductor, and harpsichordist, Lars Ulrik Mortensen at the helm, they perform at Carnegie Hall for the first time, presenting music by Muffat (drawn from their award-winning 2022 album Armonico Tributo), Handel, and J. S. Bach.

Riccardo Muti leads the Vienna Philharmonic in three concerts with programs to include Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony; Schubert’s symphonies nos. 4 (“Tragic”) and 9 (“Great”); Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7; and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World”; alongside works by Catalani and Stravinsky.

The orchestra’s concert on March 1 will be heard by listeners around the world as part of the Carnegie Hall Live broadcast and digital series.
