Evan Ziporyn: Balinese Music as Inspiration

Carnegie Hall's 2010–2011 Making Music series features Scottish composer, James MacMillan, and Americans, Christopher Rouse, and Evan Ziporyn.

In advance of his Zankel Hall Making Music concert on October 30, Evan Ziporyn spoke to Carnegie Hall about his musical inspiration, development, and direction.

The program for Evan Ziporyn: Making Music includes the composer's Tsmindao Ghmerto and the New York premiere of his long piece for gamelan, Bayu Sabda Idep.

In the first installment of our video interview, Evan speaks about he immersed himself in Balinese music and culture in his early 20s, and how it influenced his compositions for Gamelan, and future musical direction.

Throughout the next six week we will publish a further five installments of the interview in which the composer addresses his development as a composer, his path as a musician, and his Carnegie Hall experiences.
