Music inspires. With your support, so does Musical Connections.

As the holidays approach, we take a look at the ways one of our programs is making a direct impact on people in need. Below, find the story of one person whose life was deeply affected by Carnegie Hall's Musical Connections program.

Valley Lodge, a transitional housing shelter for seniors facing mental or physical challenges, is a place full of people with incredible stories to tell. One of them, a man named Ron, longed to express himself. As a participant in Carnegie Hall's Musical Connections program, Ron worked one-on-one with professional musicians, learning about the art of music and creating his own.

For the first time in many years, Ron found his voice. Over the course of the workshop, he explored his past in a song about finding the courage to connect in a real way with someone you love. At the culminating concert, Ron bravely performed his song “Let Us Try," not in a choir, but as a soloist backed by a five-piece band for an audience of about 100 people.

Ron's song was brought to life by Musical Connections musicians Rebecca Stevens and Nós Novo.

This transformative experience encouraged Ron to make music a big part of his life. “I’m taking my music very seriously,” he said. He's planning to attend a community music school in NYC, where he'll take theory and piano lessons. Ron is also preparing to audition at one of the finest non-professional choruses in the City.

Whether empowering people to sing, play musical instruments, or even write their own songs, Musical Connections has had a lasting impact on Ron and the more than 8,000 people who have participated in the program, which brings free interactive performances, creative projects, and artist residencies to those in homeless shelters, correctional facilities, senior-service organizations, and healthcare settings.
