Philip Glass's Symphony No. 9—Big and Unrelenting
Composed in 2011, Philip Glass's Symphony No. 9 receives its US premiere during tonight's celebration of the composer's 75th birthday with the American Composers Orchestra.
The world premiere took place on January 1 of this year in Linz, Austria, with Dennis Russell Davies leading the Bruckner Orchester Linz. The same artists perform the piece on the exclusive iTunes download released today on the Orange Mountain Music label.
Symphony No. 9 is a large-scale, three-movement work for orchestra. Direct in form, it is formidable in performance with doubled piccolos, bass brass, and timpani, as well as a fortified horn section. The Ninth Symphony promises to be, in Glass’s words, “big and unrelenting.”
