Live from Carnegie Hall: Kathleen Battle

Today's installment of Live from Carnegie Hall wishes American soprano Kathleen Battle a happy birthday.

Artist: Kathleen Battle
Album: Kathleen Battle at Carnegie Hall
Label: Deutsche Grammophon
Date Recorded: April 27, 1991
Fun Fact: Kathleen Battle at Carnegie Hall was one of two live Carnegie Hall recordings released in 1992 that featured the famed soprano. Her 1991 Christmas concert with Frederica von Stade, the Wynton Marsalis Septet, André Previn, Robert De Cormier, and the Orchestra of St. Luke's was released as A Carnegie Hall Christmas.

Having first sung at Carnegie Hall with James Levine and the New York Philharmonic in a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 8, Kathleen Battle went on to perform 11 more times before making her solo recital debut—accompanied by Margo Garrett—on April 27, 1991.

As well as works by Handel, Mozart, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, the program for the evening included several spirituals ("He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and "Over My Head") and the Gershwins' "Summertime."

Kathleen Battle at Carnegie Hall won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Vocal Soloist Performance in 1992. Other classical award winners that year included Carnegie Hall stalwarts Leonard Bernstein, Vladimir Horowitz, and Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax.

Battle—who celebrates her birthday today—has gone on to perform almost 20 more times at the Hall, her most recent recital taking place in 2010.
