A Tribute to Chavela Vargas: Pedro Almodovar
On November 27, Ely Guerra, Eugenia León, and Tania Libertad pay tribute to the late, legendary Chavela Vargas in an evening of traditional and contemporary Mexican song in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage.
During the next few days, we share tributes from many others in the fields of arts and entertainment who have been touched by the music and personality of Chavela Vargas over the decades.
Today, we share the thoughts of Spanish film director, screenwriter, and producer Pedro Almodovar, in whose film La Flor de mi Secreto Vargas appeared.
Pedro Almodovar on Chavela Vargas
I think there is no stage in the world large enough to house Chavela. The rough voice of tenderness.
Chavela sings and tells us how much we have loved, how much we have suffered, and how much we have been wrong. But it is not a test of conscience. After hearing Chavela, you are reconciled with your own mistakes and you want to jump out to the streets to make them again.
