Fishermen, Soldiers, Martyrs, and John the Baptist

It may sound like the beginning of a joke, but a fisherman, a martyr, a soldier, and John the Baptist will each grace Stern Auditorium's Perelman Stage this season. These characters bring with them great drama and exciting music performed by some of the world's top operatic talents.

Charismatic conductor David Robertson will lead the St. Louis Symphony in Benjamin Britten's popular 20th-century masterpiece Peter Grimes on November 22—the centenary of the composer's birth.

Our three-week Vienna: City of Dreams festival features two Vienna State Opera performances; Alban Berg's gravely beautiful first opera Wozzeck, led by conductor Daniele Gatti on February 28, and Richard Strauss's revenge-filled tour-de-force Salome, conducted by Andris Nelsons on March 1.

Early-music specialist Harry Bicket returns to Carnegie Hall with The English Concert on February 2 for the next installment in their Handel project—the rarely heard Theodora, with an outstanding cast that features soprano Dorothea Röschmann and countertenor David Daniels.
