It's New York Archives Week!

In case you haven’t heard, it’s New York Archives Week! Sponsored by the Archivists Roundtable of Metropolitan New York, Inc., this annual celebration of events aims to educate the public about the rich and varied archival collections at archives, libraries, and cultural institutions throughout the New York City area.

Archives Week Gif

At Carnegie Hall, we’re celebrating the beginning of our 123rd season and entering into year 2 of our multi-year Digital Archives Project. The digital materials from the first year of digitization have been trickling in and we are busy performing quality control and preparing assets and metadata for a new Digital Asset Management System. Earlier this year, we shipped 833 video recordings and 1294 audio recordings to The MediaPreserve, an audiovisual reformatting laboratory located near Pittsburgh. They recently sent us 13 4-terabyte hard drives of digitized video documenting the Robert Shaw Choral Workshops from 1990 to 1998. Audio files of digitized lacquer disks from the 1940s and archival study compact cassettes of select performances from the 1980s and 1990s will be delivered this month.

For digital storage, we’ve secured 440TB of space in our onsite data center in anticipation of these newly digitized legacy collections with room to accommodate our increasing born-digital production. Cheers to all of our archivist colleagues toiling out there. Preserving collections– whether physical or digital–for future generations is a challenging responsibility.
