NYO-USA: An Exciting New Chapter Begins

Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall's executive and artistic director, expresses his excitement about the recently assembled 2014 National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America and looks forward to the upcoming tour.

The Carnegie Hall team has had a wonderful time over the last few days welcoming 120 of the finest young musicians from across the country to New York as we bring together—for the second time ever—the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America.

In creating NYO-USA, Carnegie Hall’s goal is to shine a spotlight on the exceptional talent all across the United States, offering competitively selected young musicians a unique and free aspirational opportunity to train at the highest level, collaborating with internationally acclaimed artists, performing on stages around the world, and serving as dynamic musical ambassadors for their country.

We had a tremendous launch year in 2013. After years of meetings and planning, it was incredibly exciting to finally meet the young musicians who would help us bring the program to life. As we watched how they immediately embodied and took on the idea of NYO-USA, it was hard to believe that a national program such as this had never existed before. From the very first rehearsal to the last notes played on tour, the orchestra’s performances truly touched audiences, its high-quality artistry earning rave responses from critics and concertgoers alike.

While we are only at the beginning of another NYO-USA adventure, we can already tell by the impressive talent, spirit, and passion found in this year’s roster of players that the traditions established in year one are alive and well in 2014. With some returning faces and many new ones in the ranks, later this month we’ll take NYO-USA from coast to coast in performances led by renowned conductor David Robertson and featuring virtuoso violinist Gil Shaham, offering music lovers across the country the chance to meet their own national youth orchestra. As part of this year’s tour, we’re proud to present the orchestra in its Carnegie Hall debut on July 22, a special occasion that will be shared with audiences worldwide through a Carnegie Hall Live radio and digital broadcast, produced in partnership with WQXR and American Public Media.

For our musicians, we hope the coming weeks will be filled with rich cultural and personal experiences, new friends, and memories that will last a lifetime. We’re grateful to Jim Ross and the entire NYO-USA faculty, made up of principal players from orchestras across the country, for their hard work in preparing the players for the weeks ahead.

As we set sail, we invite you to join us at a concert near you to experience the music-making of NYO-USA. As we’re inspired by all that is achieved by these young players, we can rest assured that the future of music is in great hands.
