In the midst of NYO-USA's residency at Purchase College, SUNY, violinist Helen Wu reflects on the unique culture of NYO-USA. As a returning member of the orchestra, she can appreciate both the familiar aspects of the program as well as the fresh perspectives and unique backgrounds that newcomers bring to the community.
During the past two NYO-USA residencies, members of the orchestra have been asked to break into groups and brainstorm ideas for a series of fun, short video projects. This year, horn player Mark Trotter worried that the idea he was thinking of proposing to his group might not be well-received by his peers. However, the sentiment, “N-Y-O, there's something about you ...” proved universal.
Violist Faith Pak describes the experience of sitting down for the first rehearsal with the other members of the 2015 NYO-USA. In particular, she was amazed at how seemingly inscrutable elements in Tan Dun's Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds eventually came together to form a cohesive whole.
Conducting apprentice Christopher Vazan discusses some of his personal highlights from the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America's residency. He also describes the initial rehearsal with NYO-USA conductor Charles Dutoit after his arrival at Purchase College, SUNY.
