Prokofiev's Seventh Piano Sonata

In the video below, pianist Yefim Bronfman discusses Prokofiev’s Seventh Piano Sonata. The second of his three so-called “War Sonatas,” it remains the most popular of the trilogy. This sonata was premiered by pianist Sviatoslav Richter and was one of the most memorable and well-received musical events during the War years. Bronfman performs Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 7 in B-flat Major on Saturday, May 7 in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage.

Yefim Bronfman

In this concert that’s part of a complete cycle of Prokofiev’s piano sonatas, Yefim Bronfman performs three sonatas written during the Second World War. While the sonatas do not have specific programs, wartime themes are always present. The Sixth is the most diabolical of the three; its aggressive opening march conjures images of mechanized violence. The Seventh is more introspective, including an especially poetic second movement, though it concludes with a famous lightning-bolt finale. The Eighth has tremendous sweep with two large-scale outer movements that frame an uneasy central minuet.
