NeON Arts: Community Events

Last month, events featuring music, art, film, dance, and poetry took place across New York City in celebration of creative work by participants of NeON Arts, a program of the NYC Department of Probation in partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute that gives community members the opportunity to explore the arts through projects in their neighborhoods.

Learn more about three of these projects below.

Harlem youth from PlasticBand, a percussion ensemble led by Rogério Boccato and Gabriel Globus-Hoenich, pose after a performance at the Drew Hamilton Community Center on May 25. The show also featured young brass players and percussionists from G.R.I.O.T. as well as special guest Lionel Loueke, a Grammy Award–winning guitarist from Benin.   NeON Arts: One Beat (Richard Termine)

Tashamara, a participant in the Bed-Stuy NeON Arts program led by Green Earth Poets Café, recites a poem during a spoken word slam event on June 11 at the Bedford-Stuyvesant Multi-Service Center.   NeON Arts: Green Earth Poets Cafe (Jennifer Taylor)

Teens showcased their artistic acumen through paintings and murals in a workshop led by Flex Art, culminating in a reception at the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) on June 25.   NeON Arts: Flex Art (Fadi Kheir)
