• Live from Carnegie Hall: Sweet Honey In The Rock

As their upcoming appearance at Carnegie Hall approaches, this week's Live from Carnegie Hall features the all-female a cappella group Sweet Honey In The Rock.

Artist: Sweet Honey In The Rock
    Album: At Carnegie Hall
    Label: Flying Fish
    Date Recorded: November 7, 1987
Fun Fact: Sweet Honey In The Rock's name is derived from Psalm 81:16: "And with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee."

Founded by Bernice Johnson Reagon in 1973 at the DC Black Repertory Theater Company, Sweet Honey In The Rock made its Carnegie Hall debut 12 years later in 1985. Less than a year after its debut, this world renowned a cappella ensemble returned for the second of what would be more than 25 headlining appearances at the Hall. This concert became the basis for Sweet Honey In The Rock At Carnegie Hall, the group's seventh album, released the following year.

At Carnegie Hall captures the quintessential Sweet Honey In The Rock concert experience with their wide range of influences on display—especially, gospel ("Wade in the Water"), hymns ("Beatitudes"), blues ("Your Worries Ain' Like Mine"), and protest songs ("Ode to the International Debt"), as well as African song ("Denko").
