On November 19, Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra perform Honegger's Joan of Arc at the Stake—one of the most celebrated pieces by a composer who earned fame in Paris after World War I, and whose visage today adorns the Swiss 20-franc note. (As the child of Swiss parents and a graduate of the Zurich Conservatory, Honegger is something of a favorite son in the country.) With music that ranges from the darkly humorous to the achingly poignant, this dramatic oratorio—performed here in its original French—depicts Joan of Arc's trial and execution.
Here, Maestra Alsop introduces the piece.
