Opera News said Jamie Barton “grabbed the ear with her lush burnished mezzo and deeply communicative nuance.” One of opera’s rising stars and winner of the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, Barton’s program includes the world premiere of a new work by Jake Heggie.

  • Jamie Barton

    American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton is the winner of both the main and the song prizes at the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, a winner of the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and a Grammy Award nominee.

    Her 2014-2015 season begins with her debut at the San Francisco Opera as Adalgisa in Norma. Concert engagements include the orchestral premiere of Jake Heggie's The Work At Hand with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Verdi's Requiem with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis. As the latest recipient of the Marian Anderson Award, Ms. Barton appears in recital at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Further recital dates include performances in Worcester, Massachusetts; Frankfurt, Germany; and as part of a benefit for the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. On the opera stage, she returns to the Lyric Opera of Chicago in a new role, Giovanna Seymour in Anna Bolena, followed by a return to the Houston Grand Opera as Fricka in Die Walküre. Later in the season, Ms. Barton makes her role debut as Azucena in Il trovatore with the Cincinnati Opera as well as her company debut with the Seattle Opera as Fenena in Nabucco. 

    Ms. Barton's 2013-2014 season included triumphant returns to the Metropolitan Opera as Adalgisa in Norma and to the Houston Grand Opera as Fricka in Das Rheingold. In the summer, she made her Japanese debut as Meg Page in a new production of Falstaff at the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto. In concert, she sang Verdi's Requiem with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis and Britten's Spring Symphony with The Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst. She was heard in recital in Pace University's new Voce: Rising Opera Stars in Recital series as well as at Atlanta's prestigious Spivey Hall before returning to Carnegie Hall to perform in the Marilyn Horne Song Celebration, marking that great artist's 80th birthday.

  • Bradley Moore

    Bradley Moore, head of the music staff of the Houston Grand Opera and music director of the HGO Studio, recently conducted Madama Butterfly at the Castleton Festival at the invitation of Lorin Maazel. He is the founding music director of the Fire Island Opera Festival, which recently produced the first staged performances of Gluck's L'arbre enchanté since the original production at Versailles in 1775. He has conducted Il barbiere di Siviglia at Opera Colorado and has worked as assistant conductor, backstage conductor, and coach at the Metropolitan Opera, Salzburg Festival, Opéra national de Paris, Canadian Opera Company, and LA Opera, among others. He is a graduate of the Metropolitan Opera's prestigious Lindemann Young Artist Development Program.

    Widely acclaimed as a recital partner, Mr. Moore has performed with Renée Fleming and Susan Graham at Carnegie Hall and on a national tour. He also enjoys partnerships with Angela Meade, Christine Goerke, Alice Coote, Eric Cutler, Eric Owens, and clarinetist Julian Bliss. He has performed live on A Prairie Home Companion with Ms. Fleming and Yo-Yo Ma, and with Joshua Bell on CBS Sunday Morning and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. His discography includes a recital with Eric Cutler on EMI Classics, a recital with Julian Bliss for Signum Classics, and a disc of songs by American composer Daron Hagen for ARSIS Audio. Later this year, he joins Jamie Barton for a recording of songs by Charles Ives.

    Mr. Moore has performed as piano soloist with orchestras that include the National Symphony Orchestra and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He performed Martinů's Harpsichord Concerto with the San Francisco Ballet for the world premiere of Mark Morris's Beaux and recently accompanied the recitatives for the Los Angeles Philharmonic's production of Così fan tutte. He has also been heard as a recitative accompanist and continuo player with The MET Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, and The MET Chamber Ensemble.

  • Anne Martindale Williams

    Anne Martindale Williams has enjoyed a successfulcareer as principal cellist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 1979. Throughout her tenure with the orchestra, she has often been featured as soloist both in Pittsburgh and on tour in New York at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall. Mrs. Williams was soloist in the Pittsburgh premiere of Lorin Maazel's The Giving Tree, conducted by the composer, and will be featured in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra premiere of Jake Heggie's The Work At Hand.

    She has also collaborated with guest artists such as Yehudi Menuhin, André Previn, the Emerson String Quartet, Lynn Harrell, Joshua Bell, Gil Shaham, and Pinchas Zukerman in numerous chamber music performances. She made her London debut performing Dvořák's Cello Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mr. Previn.

    Mrs. Williams divides her time between the orchestra, teaching at Carnegie Mellon University, and solo and chamber music performances in the US and Europe. She has appeared in several nationally televised productions, including Concertos, produced by the BBC, and Previn and the Pittsburgh, produced by WQED. She has given master classes at many universities and festivals throughout the country, including the Curtis Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, New World Symphony in Miami, Aspen Music Festival and School, Credo Music at Oberlin College, and MasterWorks Festival. For many years, she has enjoyed performing throughout the country with her piano trio, which includes her good friends Andrés Cárdenes and David Deveau.

    Mrs. Williams is the proud recipient of the Carlow University Women of Spirit National Award and the Celebrate and Share Women of Achievement Award. She s is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Orlando Cole. Her Tecchler cello was made in Rome in 1701.

Though Spaniard Joaquín Turina is somewhat obscured by the fame of his close friend Manuel de Falla, his music is particularly fascinating for how skillfully it combines the sophistication of French art song with the passion of Andalusian cante jondo, a lyrical and moving style of flamenco. Similarly overshadowed by the songs of Debussy and Fauré, Ernest Chausson’s extraordinary mélodies capture the dark strain of the French fin de siècle—its aching nostalgia for a lost paradise—with a poignancy unmatched by any of his contemporaries. And though Antonín Dvořák’s reputation as a songwriter has to compete with his much greater fame as an instrumental composer, his vivid Gypsy Songs reveal his mastery of this intimate genre. Bringing the program up to our own time, Jamie Barton also presents the world premiere of Jake Heggie’s The Work At Hand.
