Haydn’s masterpiece, Missa in angustiis (Lord Nelson Mass), is often considered to be the work of a genius. The piece displays the full technical mastery, variety, and surprise of what has been called “Haydn’s greatest single composition”. Duruflé composed very little but his Requiem is his most performed and most beloved work. The work, inspired by chant, is traditional in form but is rich in nontraditional harmonies, making it a contemplative work of beauty.
