CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS

Leif Ove Andsnes, Piano

Thursday, January 24, 2019 8 PM Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
URL Copied
Leif Ove Andsnes by Gregor Hohenberg
Schumann’s melodic Three Romances, a tender set of miniatures dedicated to his beloved Clara, and his theatrical Carnaval frame a program that includes Janáček’s melancholy-tinged music and Bartók miniatures. A cast of many characters—including Schumann’s alter egos, the dreamy Eusebius and volatile Florestan—appear in Carnaval. This set of 21 pieces, inspired by stock figures from commedia dell’arte, highlight Schumann’s gift for creating varying moods and depicting characters with strikingly original, irresistible music.

Schumann’s Carnaval, Op. 9

A cast of characters—including Schumann’s alter egos, the dreamy Eusebius and volatile Florestan—appear in Carnaval, a musical masked ball. This set of 21 pieces features portraits of stock characters from the commedia dell’arte, like the awkward Pierrot and rowdy Harlequin, as well as cameos by Chopin, Paganini, and “Chiarina,” Schumann’s future wife, Clara. Each piece showcases Schumann’s gift for creating varying moods and depicting characters with strikingly original, irresistible music.
