The Book Smugglers

Partisans, Poets, and the Race to Save Jewish Treasures from the Nazis with David E. Fishman
Tuesday, April 9, 2019 7 PM Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University

The Book Smugglers is the true story of ghetto residents in Vilna, Lithuania, who rescued thousands of Jewish books and manuscripts—first from the Nazis and then from the Soviets—by hiding them on their bodies, burying them in bunkers, and smuggling them across borders. Many of these treasures of Eastern European Jewry found their way to New York and to the archives of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Author David Fishman recounts this remarkable story and discusses the impact of Yiddish culture on American society.
