In 1763, a group of Pennsylvania militiamen called the Paxton Boys killed the last of the Conestoga Indians in the century’s most notorious massacre. They then marched on Philadelphia, threatening to sack the city unless their demands were met. Due in large measure to the efforts of Benjamin Franklin, what followed was a war of words rather than weapons. Led by Kevin Kenny, this talk examines a critical moment in the political culture of colonial America.
