Juneteenth commemorates our nation’s true Independence Day—the day when all members of the newly formed Union were declared free. This year also marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans in the English colonies. On June 19, we gather in the spirit of strengthening our efforts to demand justice for all. This evening recognizes and highlights the contributions of African Americans since 1619.
