Sally Matthews by Sigtryggur Ari Jóhannsson, Simon Lepper by Josh Bryant
Sally Matthews thrills in grand music. In operatic roles like Strauss’s Marschallin, Janáček’s Jenůfa, or Silvia in Thomas Adès’s The Exterminating Angel, her “radiant voice and natural allure” (The New York Times) is spellbinding. The ultra-Romantic music on this program is ideally suited to her tremendous talents. From the steamy passion of Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder—composed while he was working on his opera Tristan und Isolde—to the melodic splendor of Strauss, Sibelius, and others, she will bathe every phrase in beauty.
