Beethoven was celebrated in England throughout his lifetime—so much so, that the Philharmonic Society of London commissioned his Ninth Symphony in 1817. In celebration of the reopening of The Met’s British Galleries, MetLiveArts presents two intimate, in-gallery performances featuring music that would have been originally heard in London’s opulent homes.
This program includes Beethoven’s last major work, the String Quartet in F Major, Op. 135—an intellectually confounding and emotionally ravaging piece with sharp contrasts of lightness and darkness.
