In May 1747, King Frederick the Great of Prussia presented Bach with an interesting musical challenge: to compose a fugue based on a simple musical theme. From this challenge came A Musical Offering, a monumental composition based on the king’s theme. A Musical Offering consists of two multi-voice fugues, ten canons, and a four-movement trio sonata with a flute solo written to honor Frederick the Great, a trained flutist.
