CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

Friday, October 23, 2020 8 PM Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
URL Copied
Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla by Frans Jansen, Gidon Kremer by Angie Kremer
Hear stunning orchestral tableaux from French masters, a rarely heard Soviet-era concerto, and more. The kaleidoscopic colors and implacable rhythms of Ravel’s La valse conjure ghostly ballroom images, while shimmering hues and harmonies create a dreamy impression of the sea in Debussy’s La mer. Mieczysław Weinberg—a Polish-born Soviet-era composer whose music has been championed in recent years, particularly by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla—drew inspiration from French impressionist composers as well as his friend Shostakovich. Weinberg's Violin Concerto has no time for reverie, instead grabbing your attention from its opening notes with high energy, dark-toned lyricism, and sizzling violin pyrotechnics.
