Cancelled: City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

Saturday, October 24, 2020 8 PM Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage
Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla, Sheku Kanneh-Mason by Christian Meuwly
Please note that the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has postponed its US tour, including this concert. Before ticket refunds begin in mid-June, subscribers are asked to consider donating the value of their tickets to Carnegie Hall or applying the value to future ticket purchases through June 30, 2021. To choose one of these options, please email feedback@carnegiehall.org by June 5, 2020. After that date, refunds will be processed.

Called a “virtuoso who knows how to connect with his audience” (The Seattle Times), Sheku Kanneh-Mason performs Elgar’s melancholic Cello Concerto, written after the tragedy of the first World War. Tippett’s oratorio A Child of Our Time also reflects on a troubled time, the Kristallnacht attacks on Jews in 1938 and the rise of Nazism. His deeply moving plea for tolerance is anchored in its beautiful writing for solo voice and stunning use of African American spirituals as meditations on human suffering.
