Antoine Tamestit by A. T. Birkenholz, Masato Suzuki by Marco Borggreve
Bach’s instrumental music is some of the finest of the Baroque era. All his hallmarks are present: intricate counterpoint (two or more melodies sounding simultaneously), melodic richness, and exuberant virtuosity. Hear it all in this concert that features his ornate French Suite No. 5 and tempestuous Cello Suite No. 2. There are also the rarely heard but delightful sonatas for viola da gamba—an early string instrument held between the knees—and harpsichord.
