Bernard Labadie by Dario Acosta, Emanuel Ax by Maurice Jerry Beznos
Masterpieces come in all sizes, from Mozart’s modestly orchestrated Piano Concerto No. 17 to Schubert’s “Great” Symphony. Legend says Mozart’s pet starling learned how to whistle the opening notes of this concerto’s finale. The bird had impeccable taste (since the tune is irresistible), but it’s only a slice of a work that balances genial humor with the composer’s quintessential elegance. Schubert’s symphony—a colossal structure built on a foundation of flowing melodies and tremendous emotion—lives up to its nickname.
