Valery Gergiev by Alexandra Shapunov
A great symphony can delight with melodic splendor, move the heart with tenderness, and thrill with the its sheer power—Schubert and Bruckner provide all that and more. From its churning opening to its hushed ending, the drama and passion of Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony make it one of his most enduring works. Bruckner adored Schubert, and his Eighth Symphony’s melodic beauty similarly touches the soul. The work thrills with its grandeur, especially the huge brass chorales and pounding timpani that herald its exhilarating finale.
