Cancelled: Narek Hakhnazaryan, Cello
Daniil Trifonov, Piano

Wednesday, February 24, 2021 7:30 PM Zankel Hall
Narek Hakhnazaryan by Marco Borggreve, Daniil Trifonov by Dario Acosta
The “dazzlingly brilliant” (The Strad) cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan joins his friend Daniil Trifonov, “one of the most awesome pianists of our time” (The New York Times), in two Russian masterpieces and an Arvo Pärt classic. Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata journeys from brooding to jubilation with a rapturous theme, while Shostakovich’s work contains his signature sardonic wit and melancholy. In 1977, Pärt’s chant-like melodies and notes resembling ringing bells were introduced in Fratres; this groundbreaking style became one of his hallmarks and propelled him to the front rank of contemporary composers.
