Schubert was inspired by Mozart—and his radiant symphony owes much to the master—but its free-flowing melodies and melancholy sighs are quintessential Schubert. Ravel’s vibrant Rapsodie espagnole—his first major orchestral work—and playful Ma mère l’Oye showcase his superb talents as an orchestrator. A young Stravinsky took the world by storm with The Firebird. Spectacularly orchestrated and rhythmically frenzied, its cinematic depiction of monsters and infernal dances makes it a concert-hall favorite.
