Sir András Schiff’s performances are monumental displays of intellect and virtuosity. This evening’s recital features his repertoire specialties. Bach’s overture is sweetly melodic and technically vigorous, while Haydn’s and Beethoven’s sonatas are dramatically charged. Schubert’s sonata has its intense moments too, but also an openhearted optimism that rings out from its opening theme to the keyboard fireworks of its finale.
