The last time The Philadelphia Orchestra performed Mason Bates’s music at Carnegie Hall, the audience couldn’t resist a standing ovation. Bates is back with his “most inventive and alluring [music] to date” (Chicago Tribune). Ravel innovates too, using a Basque folk tune and jazz references in his witty Piano Concerto in G Major. Shostakovich’s massive symphony is a riveting meditation on human suffering. The unsettling opening sets the stage for two churning inner movements that reflect the misery of war and a finale that reaches a disquieting calm.
