A superstar trio performs moving music written in response to Nazi and Soviet anti-Semitism. Rarely performed works by Gnesin and Rosowsky are heard alongside beloved classics by Bloch and Shostakovich, including the latter’s searing Piano Trio No. 2. In the work, Shostakovich mourns the human toll of the German invasion of Russia in dark tones that culminate in a macabre scene of inexorable power as klezmer themes are distorted and swirl about before fading to silence.
