Semyon Bychkov by Marco Borggreve, Waltraud Meier by Nomi Baumgartl
Waltraud Meier, “known for the intelligence and intensity of her portrayals” (The New York Times), is the ideal singer for the smoldering passion of Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder. Their dreamlike mood is prelude to the visceral power of Shostakovich’s “Leningrad” Symphony. Orchestrated on a massive scale, the symphony depicts with cinematic color enemy invaders on the march and their eventual defeat. Semyon Bychkov, “one of the most compelling Shostakovich interpreters of our time” (The Times, London), brings his unique personal vision to the work.
