Join us for a month-long tribute that explores the different roles, accomplishments, and contributions of women working in hip-hop music and entertainment. The dominant media narrative would have you believe that the number of outstanding women in hip-hop is small, that hip-hop is a man’s world, and that women are relegated to stereotypical roles of video vixens, rapping drama queens, or ex-wife divas. Despite the prevalence of talented and business-savvy women hip-hop artists, musicians, b-girls, executives, and influencers, their contributions go unsung—further hampering progress toward gender equality. Herstory in the Making will create the space and platform to highlight some of the pioneering women of hip-hop and give them the recognition they deserve.
