Experience Schubert’s complete Die schöne Müllerin performed by one of its most celebrated interpreters. Matthias Goerne has revisited this beloved song cycle throughout his career, including during Carnegie Hall’s Vienna: City of Dreams festival—an “exemplary performance … exquisitely rendered … Mr. Goerne inhabited each mini-drama both vocally and physically” (The New York Times). In this special Sunday matinee, Goerne takes listeners on another unforgettable journey through Schubert’s 20 songs set to poetry by Wilhelm Müller. New revelations are practically guaranteed, as he is joined on this occasion by one of today’s most insightful and in-demand pianists: Daniil Trifonov.

At a Glance

In the poetry of Wilhelm Müller, Schubert found the ideal source for his songwriting. This concert presents the first fruits of this affiliation: the sublime song cycle Die schöne Müllerin of 1823. Beware of thinking that the cycle is simply a pretty, pastoral love story with an unhappy ending. Schubert intended it to be much more than that: an almost mythical expression of the Romantic idea that true love cannot be realized on earth, but can only find its consummation in death. Wagner would later embrace this theme in Tristan und Isolde, but here, Schubert embodies it with music of more modest dimensions but at least equal profundity.
