Celebrate the return of the Galilee Chamber Orchestra, the first professional orchestra comprising both Arab and Jewish musicians in Israel. The ensemble’s 2022 Carnegie Hall debut, also led by Saleem Ashkar, was called “fresh and energetic … impressive” (New York Classical Review). They’re joined by pianist Bruce Liu—one of the most exciting players to emerge in recent years—for Mozart’s lyrically rich yet musically intimate Piano Concerto No. 23. The orchestra also performs Felix Mendelssohn’s evocative “Scottish” Symphony, whose vibrant colors and folk melodies are inspired by the composer’s storied walking tour of the country.

At a Glance

This concert presents two masterpieces from the 18th and 19th centuries celebrated for their magical atmosphere and melodic profusion. Felix Mendelssohn wrote both the Hebrides Overture and the “Scottish” Symphony following an inspirational trip to Scotland when he was only 20, though he put off completing the symphony until 1842. More of a tone poem than a symphony, it has an aura of mystery combined with Mendelssohn’s signature refinement, ending in an unexpected blaze of glory. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23—one of the greatest works in a form this composer brought to its highest level of perfection—is known for its dream-like ambiance and subtlety. The concert opens with the New York premiere of Nizar Elkhater’s nocturnal whispers.
