At a Glance
Günther Groissböck’s program is a comprehensive survey of the lieder form as it developed throughout the 19th century, evenly divided between songs by German composers and those from Mr. Groissböck’s native Austria. This afternoon we hear songs by four of the most famous lieder creators: Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss, and Gustav Mahler. Less known are the songs of Anton Bruckner, who devoted most of his vocal music to choruses. Rarest of all are lieder by Austrian composer Hans Rott, who tragically died at age 25 before fulfilling his promise.
