Composer and vocalist Stephanie Susberich will perform her original song cycle based on the poetry of a notable yet unsung 19th-century Cuban poet who died in political exile in Key West during Cuba’s War of Independence (aka the Spanish-American War). A key figure in the Hispanic American modernist movement, Juana Borrero has a literary legacy that is linked to the thriving Cuban émigré community in late–19th-century Key West, the southernmost city in the continental US. The CCCNY is proud to feature her work on the eve of the 130th anniversary of her death.
