A quilted mosaic in the shape of the United States of America
How did American composers step out of Europe’s shadow in the early 20th century and develop their own distinctive musical identity? This course will explore the music of Charles Ives, Ruth Crawford Seeger, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and others, examining their role in the rise of a distinctively American form of modernism.
