At a Glance

CHOPIN  Barcarolle in F-sharp Major, Op. 60

Of Venice’s many cultural associations, none is more evocative than the barcarolle, a song sung by Venetian gondoliers as they steered their boats through the city’s network of canals and lagoons. The Op. 60 Barcarolle is distinguished by its lilting 12/8 rhythm that mimics the repetitive motion of the boatmen’s oars.

CHOPIN  Piano Sonata No. 3 in B Minor, Op. 58

Chopin’s third and last piano sonata reflects his late-life interest in contrapuntal textures and extended formal designs. It was arguably the unparalleled range and subtlety of Chopin’s pianism, along with his unique blend of Classical discipline and Romantic freedom, that enabled him to cast off the shackles of musical convention so successfully in works such as the great Sonata in B Minor.

FRANCK  Prelude, Chorale, and Fugue, Op. 21

Arguably the greatest of Franck’s piano works, the Prelude, Chorale, and Fugue demonstrates his propensity for cyclical forms, diaphanous textures, and organic thematic development. After abandoning a career as a concert pianist, Franck became a master organist who mesmerized Parisian audiences with his elaborate improvisations.

PROKOFIEV  Piano Sonata No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 14

Prokofiev cultivated a sharply etched, ironic, and occasionally acerbic style that propelled him to the forefront of the modernist movement before and during World War I. The multi-movement format of the D-Minor Sonata highlights the vivid contrasts that characterize his musical language.
