Alvin Ailey founded his company as a “showcase for Black music and culture,” uplifting “Black America’s contribution to music and dance.” Ailey II extends that mission, celebrating the African American cultural heritage while ensuring that Americans everywhere can experience the magic of dance. The company is renowned for bringing its technical mastery and emotional depth to works by the most daring established and emerging choreographers. Founded in 1974, Ailey II gained global success under its first artistic director, Sylvia Waters, and today, under the leadership of Francesca Harper, the company continues to flourish, bringing fresh perspectives to the next generation of dance.
