For nearly 60 years, music lovers have flocked to the New York String Orchestra’s annual December 24 performance at Carnegie Hall. Tonight, experience a new chapter of this beloved tradition, as Michael Stern conducts the youthful ensemble in his inaugural season as music director. Violinist extraordinaire Gil Shaham joins as soloist in Barber’s enchanting Violin Concerto, which he has performed brilliantly with orchestras worldwide. The wide-ranging program also includes Beethoven’s charming and lighthearted Symphony No. 8 and his Overture to Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus, plus Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, which draws from music of the English Renaissance and a theme by 16th-century composer Thomas Tallis.
