New York String Orchestra
Celebrate a New Year and a new generation of musicians in the annual, late-December concert by the exceptional New York String Orchestra. Led by conductor Michael Stern in his inaugural season, the youthful ensemble is joined by Jeremy Denk—“a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs” (The New York Times)—in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, one of Denk’s signature performance pieces. This evening’s program also includes the popular eight-minute overture to J. Strauss Jr.’s Die Fledermaus, Stravinsky’s quintessential The Firebird Suite, and Valerie Coleman’s Umoja, an “Anthem for Unity” that was born as a song for women’s choir and is featured tonight in its lush arrangement for string orchestra.
