Yannick Nézet-Séguin by Pete Checchia
Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s conducts Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony as part of his complete Mahler symphony cycle. With its shimmering and pastoral awakening, spectacularly thunderous climax, and folk song and dance references both upbeat and twisted, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 is an enduringly popular symphonic staple. Though The Philadelphia Orchestra is among the world’s finest Mahler interpreters today, it’s been more than 20 years since the ensemble has performed the First at Carnegie Hall. Tonight, experience its vital interpretation under Nézet-Séguin, plus a brief opening selection by Price and the New York premiere of Caroline Shaw’s The Observatory.
