The voices of Phillis Wheatley, Benjamin Banneker, Ignatius Sancho, Prince Hall, and the Black Church illuminate how Black imagination generated alternate futures from within a world that denied their humanity.
Encores! The Wild Party

Join an assortment of New York City’s most colorful characters for a night like no other in the dark underbelly of the city at the end of the 1920s. Michael John LaChiusa (The Gardens of Anuncia) and George C. Wolfe (Jelly’s Last Jam) bring Joseph Moncure March’s notorious narrative poem to life in their vivid, jazz-infused musical adaptation directed by two-time Helen Hayes Award winner Lili-Anne Brown.

Alan Lomax and Diego Carpitella’s Musical Journey

This project highlights the pioneering work of Alan Lomax, the American ethnomusicologist who, with Italian scholar Diego Carpitella, undertook a groundbreaking field recording campaign in Sicily in 1954. Their work preserved an extraordinary heritage of Italian folk music, bringing voices from rural communities into the global conversation on culture and identity.

Enrico Caruso’s journey from Naples to New York embodies the story of Italian migration and its cultural impact in America. The exhibition, first presented at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli in 2022 includes rare photographs and historic recordings from the collections of the Istituto Centrale per i Beni Sonori e Audiovisivi, curated by Giuliana Muscio with music consultant Simona Frasca.
