The Great Migration

The Great Migration of African Americans from the South to the industrialized cities of the Northeast, Midwest, and West during the early 20th century up to the 1970s changed the sound of America forever. Carnegie Hall’s focus on this music features Jason Moran and Alicia Hall Moran’s exploration from rhythm and blues to gospel, classical to Broadway, work songs to rock ‘n’ roll. There is also trumpeter Nicholas Payton, who traces the path of African rhythms from the Caribbean to New Orleans, Kansas City, Chicago, and New York; and Deva Mahal’s emotionally searing songs of love, loss and the power of the human spirit to overcome.

This is one of many migrations that will be explored in a citywide festival that also features events beyond Carnegie Hall, including public programming, performances, exhibitions, events at partner organizations, and more. Explore the complete festival listings.
