Carnegie Hall Presents Uruguayan Singer/Songwriter Jorge Drexler in Zankel Hall

On Saturday, January 22 at 10:00 p.m. in Zankel Hall, singer/songwriter Jorge Drexler performs an elegant evening of popular music rooted in the urban rhythmic style of his native Uruguay. Joined by band mates, Borja Barrueta (drums, lap steel guitar); Sebastián Merlín (percussion, marimba, acoustic guitar); Matías Cella (bass, ukulele) and Carlos Campón (theremin, lap steel guitar); Drexler will perform selections from his Grammy Award-nominated 2010 live album “Amar La Trama” ( “Loving the Story”)—a record which focuses on the plot of the love story rather than its final destination. This concert is presented in partnership with the World Music Institute.

Known for his distinctive combination of traditional Uruguayan melodies with traces of bossa nova, pop, and electronica, Drexler’s music encompass themes of love, identity, race, and religion as with his composition, “Al Otro Lado Del Rio” from the soundtrack of the 2004 film The Motorcycle Diaries, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. With his most recent recording, Drexler continues to demonstrate his mastery of unforgettable melodies and urban rhythms.

Prior to Drexler’s performance, beginning at 9:00 p.m., concert-goers are invited to enjoy a laid-back pre-concert experience in the Zankel Hall lounge and meet others who share their passion for music. The first 200 concert-goers to arrive will receive a complimentary drink, courtesy of Carnegie Hall.
