Carnegie Hall Presents Chris Potter’s Underground on November 10 in Zankel Hall

On Wednesday, November 10 at 9:30 p.m., saxophonist and composer Chris Potter headlines a performance with his band Underground in Zankel Hall. Dubbed “one of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet" by DownBeat magazine, Potter has earned the reputation as one of his generation's premier improvisers as well as that of an accomplished composer and bandleader. For their Zankel Hall performance, Potter’s Underground—featuring guitarist Adam Rogers, keyboardist Craig Taborn, and drummer Nate Smith—will showcase their signature progressive sound. Their most recent recording, Ultrahang (2009) marks the culmination of five years working as a quartet and illustrates the band at its uninhibited yet cohesive best.

    About the Artist
A world-class soloist, accomplished composer and formidable bandleader, saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. Identified by JazzTimes as "a figure of international renown” and dubbed by 2011 NEA Jazz Master, Dave Liebman as "one of the best musicians around," Potter was voted as one of the greatest tenor saxophonists by readers of DownBeat magazine in their 2008 Readers Poll (second only to tenor saxophone great Sonny Rollins). Potter is the youngest musician ever to win Denmark's prestigious Jazzpar Prize, and his discography includes 15 albums as a leader and appearances on over 100 albums as a sideman. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for his solo work on “In Vogue,” a track from Joanne Brackeen’s 1999 album Pink Elephant Magic, and was prominently featured on Steely Dan’s Grammy Award-winning album from 2000, Two Against Nature. He has performed or recorded with many of the leading names in jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, the Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas, and Ray Brown among others.
