In 1999, Gyan Riley became the first guitarist ever to be awarded a full scholarship from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has since expanded his career as a composer and instrumentalist, performing original solo and ensemble works in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the UK, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Croatia, Turkey, Norway, Ireland, and throughout the United States. While still studying at the Conservatory, he received a recording contract for his debut CD of original works, Food for the Bearded (New Albion Records). Mr. Riley has received commissions or grants from the Carnegie Hall Corporation, the San Francisco Foundation, the Elaine Kaufman Cultural Center, and the Peter S. Reed Foundation, and was selected as one of six composers worldwide for the 2005 Sundance Film Festival Composers Lab. His composition The Wane of More, commissioned by the Carnegie Hall Corporation, received its world premiere in April 2007 at the culminating concert of The Weill Music Institute’s Professional Training Workshop led by Osvaldo Golijov and Dawn Upshaw. In September of 2007, his second recording of original compositions, entitled Melismantra, will be released online worldwide.
